Chapter 779: The Peasant Girl’s Splendid Manor
Chapter 779: A Clear Perception (4)
At this moment, Shen Ji was gazing directly at the courtyard, not sure what he saw or heard, but a smile unconsciously appeared on his warm face, making his already handsome features even more captivating.
Xiao Ruiyuan followed his gaze and saw Mo Yan pretending to be angry while tugging on the ears of the two beasts. His expression darkened immediately, and his eyes turned sharp, like daggers, staring at Shen Ji.
Since discovering Shen Ji as his "rival," Xiao Ruiyuan had never liked him, yet he couldn't deny that Shen Ji was indeed more fitting for Mo Qingze's ideal son-in-law. Xiao Ruiyuan wasn’t a virtuous man, and he wouldn’t resort to underhanded tactics, but having this living, breathing competitor before him, brazenly eyeing the woman he loved, made him feel an urge to kill.
Unaware of the dark thoughts of his "enemy," Shen Ji kept his eyes fixed on the radiant woman in the yard, unable to look away. However, realizing that such behavior was unbecoming of a gentleman, he hurriedly averted his gaze, his pale face turning slightly flushed in embarrassment.
Mo Yan had kept her word. During dinner, she indeed didn’t feed the two beasts.
Xiao Hua and Mao Tuan, looking longingly at the delicious food spread across the table, drooled as they gazed at the dishes. How could anyone bear to eat with those two pairs of sparkling eyes watching them?
Everyone knew that the two beasts wouldn’t eat food given by anyone other than Mo Yan, but they couldn’t help themselves and offered some delicious sauced ribs. The two creatures merely glanced at the food before turning their eyes back to their owner, as if waiting for her nod to begin feasting.
Mo Yan, unfazed, calmly continued to eat and drink. This time, she was determined to teach these two dim-witted creatures a lesson; otherwise, the next time, her waist might actually break from their antics. Her muscles still ached from earlier when she had been cooking.
After everyone had finished and the table was cleared, the two beasts finally shifted their positions, eyeing Da Bai and the Golden Beast as they devoured their food.
Having run one hundred laps around the yard, Xiao Hua and Mao Tuan were simply too hungry to bear it any longer. Mao Tuan was still okay, gazing longingly at the food, but Xiao Hua, with no shame, cautiously crept up to Da Bai, hoping for some leftovers. However, Da Bai didn’t even spare it a glance, elegantly finishing every bite in the bowl, not leaving a drop of sauce behind.
Xiao Hua finally gave up in despair, its large tail dragging on the ground as it slunk into a corner, curling up miserably. It looked utterly pitiful.
Mao Tuan, glancing at its empty bowl, then at the owner who showed no sign of feeding it, was also overcome with despair. Drooping its head, it snuggled up next to Xiao Hua, pressing its head against its belly as though it could make its growling stomach stop.
While everyone sat by the fire, nibbling on roasted sweet potatoes, corn on the cob, and other treats to tempt Xiao Hua and Mao Tuan, the two beasts didn’t budge. They merely watched Mo Yan, whose mouth watered as she held a roasted sausage.
Mo Yan was an excellent cook, and her roasted food smelled much sweeter than others'. The children from the Han family loved it, calling her "Yan Jie" sweetly and receiving a lot of tasty treats in return.
It wasn’t until the children were full and the adults told them not to eat anymore, lest they get sick, that Mo Yan’s food baskets gradually filled up again.
After everyone had retired to their rooms for the night, Mo Yan took two large baskets full of roasted sausages, meats, and sweet potatoes, along with the Four Beasts, back to her room. In the eager gaze of Xiao Hua and Mao Tuan, she divided the food between them.
Xiao Hua and Mao Tuan squinted their eyes in delight, gobbling down the food. They were so happy, they seemed as if they could fly. Their love for their owner reached new heights, clearly forgetting that it was the same person who had punished them by making them run a hundred laps and starve earlier.
The world of food lovers—truly beyond the understanding of ordinary people!
Mo Yan, though claiming she was punishing them, could never truly bring herself to starve them. Seeing the two beasts eating so happily, she gently patted their heads. Just as she stood up to prepare her bed for the night, she heard the door creak open. A long leg stepped inside.
At the same time, the door to Shen Ji's room, on the south side of the Mo household, was knocked. Shen Ji quickly slipped on his clothes and went to answer the door. To his surprise, it was Mo Qingze standing outside, looking at him with a warm and friendly expression.
Shen Ji’s eyelids twitched. As he stepped aside to let Mo Qingze in, he invited, "Ziyu, please come in."
Mo Qingze nodded with a smile and entered. After Shen Ji closed the door behind him, Mo Qingze casually asked, "Yunjin has already passed the imperial examination; do you know if there are any arrangements for him at home?"
"May I ask what you mean, Ziyu?" Shen Ji’s brow furrowed slightly. He hid the surprise in his heart and responded with a smile.
Shen Ji was kind by nature, but not a fool. He and Mo Qingze had often discussed academic topics or hobbies in the past, but they had never talked about personal matters. Mo Qingze’s sudden visit tonight, coupled with this particular question, clearly had some other motive.
