Chapter 747: The Peasant Girl’s Splendid Manor
Chapter 747: Annihilation (4)
“Don’t cry, don’t cry, both of you, I’m back now,” Mo Qingze said, stretching out his arms to hug his daughter and adoptive daughter, feeling helpless against their tears.
“Father!”
“Adoptive Father!”
Zhen’er and Yun Zhao also approached. Unlike the girls, these two boys, though emotional, managed to hold back their tears.
After Mo Qingze’s arrest, the two boys had refused to go to school, insisting on waiting for their father’s safe return. Eventually, Mo Yan had to use force to get them to attend.
At school, while few knew about the scandal involving their father, the brothers endured a great deal of distress from their peers' criticism. One day, when an older classmate insulted Mo Qingze publicly, the brothers could no longer tolerate it. They fought the classmate, left the school with their books, and went home.
Upon learning this, Mo Yan did not force them back to school or lecture them. Instead, she had them work in the vegetable greenhouse for a few hours each day, pulling weeds and watering plants.
The brothers had never worked on the land before. After the initial novelty wore off, they found the work exhausting and monotonous, but it helped temper their characters, making them more composed.
Mo Qingze noticed the change, especially in Zhen’er, who had previously been quite unruly and a source of concern. Now, he was much improved.
He patted their heads with a warm smile and did not question why they had stayed home instead of attending school.
Yang Bao and Mo Fang approached, relieved to see Mo Qingze looking well and clean, showing no signs of severe punishment.
Yang Bao exclaimed, “Master Mo, welcome back! It’s a great joy to see you safe. May everything go smoothly for you from now on!”
Mo Qingze stepped forward and thanked Yang Bao with a bow. “Thank you, Brother Yang, for taking care of the family over the past month and a half.”
Mo Qingze’s arrest had caused a stir in the village. Those who believed in his innocence had defended him against rumors, and Yang Bao had prevented any disturbances or ill intentions towards the Mo family.
Mo Yan had already informed her father of these matters, and Mo Qingze was grateful that the village had not caused further harm to his children during his imprisonment.
Yang Bao waved his hands modestly. “It’s because your family has a good reputation in the village. Everyone believes in your innocence. As village head, I merely ensured that things remained peaceful.”
This was indeed the case. If it had been the old Mo family, even Yang Bao’s efforts would not have stopped people from causing trouble.
Seeing Mo Qingze safely return and clear of charges, Yang Bao felt relieved. If he had not supported the Mo family, maintaining relations would have been difficult.
Mo Qingze and his daughter greeted the villagers and thanked them for their concern.
As the day was cold and the sun was setting, Mo Yan noticed the children in the crowd shivering. She quickly suggested, “Father, Uncle Yang, it’s too cold outside. Let’s talk at home!”
“Right, right, let’s go home!” The villagers, reminded of the cold, agreed and followed the Mo family back to their home.
The carriage trailed behind the lively and chattering crowd, its hooves echoing in the distance.
At the Mo family home, Mo Qingze had planned to briefly explain his exoneration. However, with so many people asking questions, he ended up recounting his entire ordeal, including his imprisonment and the trials he faced.
The villagers were deeply moved and asked about his experiences before the Emperor and other high officials. Yang Bao and Mo Fang were especially excited, feeling that the village and the Mo family had gained honor from Mo Qingze’s achievements and the Emperor’s rewards.
For Yang Bao and Mo Fang, this was not just Mo Qingze’s honor but also a victory for Liuyang Village and the Mo clan. Mo Qingze’s recognition and reward from the Emperor far outweighed Mo Yan’s title of County Princess in their view.
After spending a long time at the Mo family home, the villagers left, declining the Mo family’s offer for dinner, and went home with their eager children.
The dinner table at the Mo house was lively, extending well beyond the usual time. After eating, everyone warmed themselves by the fire before heading to their rooms to rest.
Back in her courtyard, Mo Yan was about to enter her room when a secret guard appeared and handed her a letter.
Mo Yan lit a lamp and opened the letter. The opening lines stunned her: The Lin family had been raided, Prince Heng was under house arrest, and Consort Lin had been executed!
