Chapter 776: The Peasant Girl’s Splendid Manor
Chapter 776: A Clear Perception (1)
Looking at Du Shi’s pained and confused expression, Mo Qingze sighed deeply. His feelings toward this woman were hard to describe. They had been young spouses, and if he said he had never been moved by her, it would be a lie. Later, when she ran away with another man, he hated her. But after that hatred faded, he began to reflect and realized that he had a share of responsibility for the events that had led to this. His anger toward Du Shi gradually diminished.
However, the moment she carelessly fabricated the story that Yan’er was Chen Ji’s daughter to save him, Mo Qingze no longer held any hope for this woman. He would not allow his child to be harmed, and he would never let his children accept such a mother.
Seeing that her father was only angry with Du Shi, without any lingering affection, Mo Yan felt a sense of relief. The gloomy mood caused by Du Shi finally began to ease. She stopped looking at Du Shi and turned to her father, saying, “Father, there are still guests at home. Let’s go back!”
Mo Qingze had the same intention. He gave Du Shi one last deep look, as if he wanted to say something, but ultimately decided it wasn’t necessary. Without speaking a word, he turned and walked away with Mo Yan.
Du Shi stood frozen in place, staring helplessly as the father and daughter disappeared around a corner. The next sound she heard was the door closing, and with it, her courage to approach vanished. She stood in place, the snow falling heavier and gradually covering the shallow footprints left by the two of them, until nothing was left to show their passing.
Du Shi remained standing, motionless, as snowflakes continued to fall on her head and shoulders, melting from the warmth of her body, soaking through her thin clothes.
Once she was sure that Mo Qingze and his daughter wouldn’t return, a figure who had been hiding behind the courtyard wall appeared behind Du Shi. He raised his hand and made a strange gesture in the air, then vanished from sight, leaving behind only two footprints that had not yet been covered by snow.
Mo Qingze and his daughter returned to the dining hall with smiles, continuing to entertain the guests as if nothing had happened.
Liu Tinglan sat next to Mo Yan and whispered, “Yan’er, you were gone for so long, did something happen?”
Mo Yan picked up a dish that Liu Tinglan liked and replied casually, “It’s fine, it’s all settled.”
“That’s good,” Liu Tinglan responded without probing further, offering Mo Yan a dish she liked as well. “By the way, didn’t you see Lord Xiao? He left shortly after you went out, and he still hasn’t returned.”
Mo Yan froze for a moment, then turned to look at Xiao Ruiyuan’s seat, only to find it empty! Just as she was about to ask, a tall figure, carrying a cold aura, appeared at the door. It was none other than Xiao Ruiyuan, who had left earlier.
Mo Yan lifted her head and met Xiao Ruiyuan’s deep gaze, immediately understanding the concern in his eyes. Everything became clear to her in that moment.
Startled by Mo Yan’s sudden glance, Xiao Ruiyuan instinctively averted his eyes, feeling for the first time in his life a sense of guilt.
What had happened outside the courtyard, Yan’er surely didn’t want a fourth person to know. How should he explain it to her?
Mo Yan could tell from Xiao Ruiyuan’s expression what he was thinking, and though she felt a bit of sadness, she couldn’t help but smile inwardly. Although his accidental overhearing had caught her off guard, she didn’t believe it was intentional. If he started doubting her origins and despising her because of it, then she would have truly misjudged him.
Seeing that Mo Yan showed no displeasure, Xiao Ruiyuan secretly sighed with relief. He quickly returned to his usual calm demeanor and sat down at his seat, ignoring Chu Heng’s probing gaze. He served Chu Heng some of his favorite dishes and quickly piled a bowl full.
