Chapter 423: Ruan Ruan Is Very Likable

Qin Ruan withdrew her gaze from the safe deposit box and asked Hou Chuan with a worried tone, "Is Third Young Master Hou's alright?"

Hou Chuan respectfully replied, "Master is not in a good mood."

Qin Ruan fell into silence. If Hou Yunjiao wasn't in a good mood, she couldn't go back either.

She asked again, "Is Second Master at home as well?"

Huo Chuan replied, "Yes, Second Master will also go on this mission."

Qin Ruan's heart skipped a beat, and a look of doubt flashed in her eyes. "What exactly happened?"

Hou Chuan pursed his lips and said, "Madam, I will explain later. Let Hou Zhi leave first. There are people waiting for her outside."

Qin Ruan waved her hand and said, "Go ahead."

Huo Chuan walked up to Hou Zhi and placed the safe deposit box in front of her.

Hou Zhi took the box, and it was not light. Her body sank slightly but quickly stabilized.

"Xiao Zhi, come back safely."

Hou Zhi, who had just regained her balance, looked at Hou Chuan with a surprised expression. She bit her lip and said, "I will."

Hou Chuan clenched his jaw and spoke in a cold tone, "Go. When you come back, the brothers will celebrate your return."

"Okay!" Hou Zhi nodded vigorously, her eyes slightly red.

She turned and bowed to Qin Ruan, "Madam, I'm leaving."

Qin Ruan narrowed her eyes, her gaze shifting between Hou Zhi and Hou Chuan.

She had a feeling that these two were too serious, as if Hou Zhi was embarking on a journey of life and death.

Ignoring the strange feeling in her heart, Qin Ruan spoke gently to Hou Zhi, "Huo Zhi, come back safely."

Hou Zhi lowered her head and softly responded before briskly walking away with the box.

Qin Anguo stared at Hou Zhi's departing figure, his sharp eyes narrowed, and a shrewd expression appeared on his face.

Only after Hou Zhi's figure disappeared did he slowly speak to Qin Ruan, "Ruan Ruan, that girl who just left probably won't return."

Qin Ruan's expression changed abruptly, "Dad, what do you mean?"

Qin Anguo took a sip of tea, smiled warmly at Qin Ruan, and slowly said, "Extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures. Extraordinary measures require extraordinary individuals. It is rumored that the death warriors of ancient noble families are fiercely loyal and fearless of death. They dare to face death without fearing sacrifice, and they never seek rewards for their achievements. To them, the reception of celebration represents courageous sacrifice, their ultimate honor. These are just rumors I've heard, and it's hard to discern the truth from them. But I had a feeling that the girl just now went on a one-way journey."

Qin Ruan's eyes narrowed, sharp and piercing as she stared at Hou Chuan beside her, and asked in a deep voice, "How dangerous is this mission for Hou Zhi?"

Hou Chuan lowered his gaze, his tone calm: ''Ten deaths without life.''

Qin Ruan took a deep breath, trying hard to remain calm ''Why does it have to be her?''

Hou Chuan's tone remained as cold as before ''It's the Master's command, and as a member of the secret department, it must be executed.''

Implicitly, there was no reason. Since the master had sent them on a mission, even if they knew it meant certain death, they had to go without hesitation.

Qin Ruan ground her teeth, her face turned frighteningly dark, and the accusing gaze in her eyes made people shudder.

She quite liked Hou Zhi, this girl. She was a few years older, composed in character, rarely spoke, and her way of doing things made people feel comfortable without any sense of offense.

Qin Ruan stood up and walked briskly towards the door.

''Madam!'' Hou Chuan immediately stepped forward to stop her. ''Madam, Third Young Master has a message for me to convey to you.''

''Whatever the message is, tell me later!''

Qin Ruan didn't stop her steps. She couldn't just stand by and watch Hou Zhi go to her death.

Ten deaths without life, what kind of concept was that? Hou Zhi was undoubtedly going to die if she went.

Seeing Qin Ruan about to rush out of the door, Hou Chuan rudely rushed forward and stretched out his arms to stop her. ''Madam, Third Young Master said that if you try to stop me, let me tell you that Hou Zhi deserves this fate, so you don't need to feel soft-hearted for her.''

There was an underlying meaning in his words. Did Third Young Master imply that Hou Zhi deserved to die?

Qin Ruan frowned, staring coldly at Hou Chuan. ''What do you mean?''

Hou Chuan clenched his teeth, showing a hint of emotion, his tone slightly heavier: ''Huo Zhi herself is a spy planted by another family in the Huo family.''

''Are you sure?!''

A flicker of doubt passed through Qin Ruan's eyes, her face filled with shock. In that instant, her thoughts were completely in chaos.

Her heart went up and down, her brain not functioning properly.

If Hou Zhi was a spy planted by another family, why would Third Young Master assign her to be by her side?

In her previous life, at the Wondrous Treasure Mountain Cemetery, Hou Zhi even followed Third Young Master to pay respects to her.

Qin Ruan was familiar with both Hou Zhi and Hou Chuan, and even with Hou Qiang, who was constantly by Hou Yirong's side, she had occasionally met him.

If Hou Zhi was a traitor, why was she able to be with Third Young Master in her previous life without any changes?

No, something's not right!

Qin Ruan suddenly widened her eyes.

In the past life, before Third Young Master's death, Hou Zhi suddenly disappeared.

In the six months leading up to Hou Yunjiao death, only Hou Chuan remained by his side, and Hou Zhi suddenly vanished.

Could she really be a traitor to the Hou family?

Qin Ruan couldn't believe it. With Hou Yunjiao regard for her and their child, it was impossible for him to leave such a potential danger by her side.

She frowned, her face showing evident distress and annoyance. She felt agitated and increasingly frustrated the more she thought about it.

Qin Anguo walked up to Qin Ruan and patted her shoulder. "Don't overthink things on your own. If there's something you don't understand, why not ask Third Young Master Hou?"

Her mind instantly cleared, and Qin Ruan quickly turned back to the desk, picked up her phone, and opened the call log, dialing Hou Yunjiao's number directly.

The call was answered immediately.

"Ruan Ruan?" Hou Yunjiao's voice came through the speaker, cold and low.

Hearing his familiar tone, Qin Ruan could sense that Hou Yunjiao wasn't in a good mood.

She went straight to the point. "Third Young Master, will Huo Zhi come back alive this time?"

Hou Yunjiao seemed unprepared for Qin Ruan's question about whether Hou Zhi would return alive; it wasn't within his expectations.

He chuckled softly and calmly through the speaker, his voice clearly reaching Qin Ruan's ears. "Ruan Ruan, aren't you going to ask me if Hou Zhi is a traitor?"

Qin Ruan replied with certainty, "I don't think she is."

Saying she believed Hou Zhi wasn't a traitor was equivalent to saying she trusted Hou Yunjiao.

She believed in this man, that he wouldn't put her and their child in danger.

On the other end of the phone, Hou Yunjiao stood on the study balcony, his hand lightly resting on the railing. Upon hearing Qin Ruan's confident answer, he looked slightly stunned.

After a moment, he understood something and laughed again, his laughter deep and pleasing.

Qin Ruan held her phone to her ear, and Hou Yunjiao's laughter resonated clearly through the speaker, reaching her slightly unsettled heart.

It felt as if he was standing right beside her, leaning down and speaking in her ear—this kind of reassurance was something no one else could provide.

"Indeed, she isn't."

Hou Yunjiao's gentle voice was as mellow as wine.

He gave Qin Ruan a clear answer, a reward for her trust.

The young girl seemed naive, but when it came to matters of right and wrong, she always trusted him like this.

Hou Zhi, a hidden guard, could she gain Qin Ruan's trust in such a short time?

The answer was no.

So why did Qin Ruan believe that Hou Zhi wasn't a traitor? It all came down to him.

Hou Yunjiao, pleased by Qin Ruan's response and her trust, felt a good deal of his anger dissipate after receiving the devastating news.

This little girl was just so likable.
