Chapter 860: The Peasant Girl’s Splendid Manor
Chapter 860: A Twist in Fate—A Proposal at the Door (2)
Liu Tinglan stuck out her tongue in embarrassment but didn’t argue. She understood that her parents didn’t want her to tell Mo Yan about the situation. Firstly, they were concerned it would drag Mo Yan into the mess, and secondly, they felt family matters should be handled within the family. They didn’t want their troubles to be spread around, especially in front of Mo Yan, even though they knew she would never judge them. But still, it wasn’t something to share lightly.
Seeing her friend's bashful expression, Mo Yan let go of her frustration and asked seriously, “Now that things have come to this, what are Uncle and Aunt planning to do?”
Although there was evidence that the responsibility for the broken engagement lay with the scoundrel, rumors wouldn’t easily disappear. Mo Yan suspected that Liu’s family name had already been dragged through the mud. After all, they wouldn’t have sent Liu Tinglan here if the situation hadn’t gotten dire.
Liu Tinglan’s face darkened. “The explanations have been given, but there are still people gossiping behind our backs. My parents’ view is that the truth will eventually come out, so we’re just waiting for it to blow over.”
The best way to deal with rumors was to stay silent. The more one tried to explain, the more mistakes could be made, and the longer the rumors would last. If they simply endured, things would naturally calm down in time.
Mo Yan frowned, thinking through the situation, but she couldn’t come up with a good solution immediately. Merely staying silent wouldn’t be enough; the best way was to rise to greater heights. If they could reach a higher status, the rumors would naturally fade away.
Not wanting her troubles to affect her friend, Liu Tinglan tried to lighten the mood. “Alright, let’s stop talking about these depressing matters. The fact that I’ve finally gotten rid of that scumbag is a huge relief. Nothing else matters!”
Mo Yan smiled and agreed, “You’re right. We shouldn’t let these unhappy things weigh on us! Recently, there have been so many beautiful wildflowers blooming in the mountains. How about I take you there tomorrow to pick some to decorate the house?”
Liu Tinglan, who was fond of beautiful things, brightened up at the suggestion. “It’s a deal! But if you’re too busy, we can go in a few days. I don’t want to delay your important matters.”
Mo Yan laughed. “I do have things to do, but it’s a perfect excuse for me to get my father to cover for me. He’s been holed up in his study, reviewing his books. I’m worried he’s going to get sick from overwork.”
Liu Tinglan chuckled. “Uncle Mo works too hard! He must be preparing for the palace exams! By the way, the results of the preliminary exams should be out soon, right?”
Mo Yan nodded. “Yes, the results will be out on the 26th, the day after tomorrow.”
“Don’t worry, Uncle Mo’s studies are so impressive, he’s sure to pass! After the palace exams, Uncle Mo will be appointed to an official post, and then you’ll be the daughter of an official!” Liu Tinglan teased with a smile.
“Of course! My father will definitely pass!” Mo Yan beamed with confidence. “But I’m already a county princess, appointed directly by the Emperor. My status is much higher than an ordinary official’s daughter.”
As she said this, Mo Yan couldn’t help but poke Liu Tinglan’s forehead and grinned mischievously. “With my status as a princess, if I just inform the capital’s authorities, that Du scoundrel won’t dare cause any more trouble. But you and your parents insisted on being polite, and now I’ve missed the chance to show off my power.”
Liu Tinglan felt a little regretful, her face falling as she complained, “I forgot that you’re a county princess! It’s all your fault—if you were flaunting your status like you should, I would never have forgotten!”
“Are you blaming me now?” Mo Yan rolled her eyes. “Are you suggesting I should wear a county princess plaque around my neck like the Five Beasts, so you won’t forget my status?”
