Chapter 859: The Peasant Girl’s Splendid Manor
Chapter 859: A Twist in Fate—A Proposal at the Door (1)
Seeing Liu Tinglan with her eyes swollen and filled with sorrow, Mo Yan was startled, fearing her friend had suffered some significant emotional blow that she hadn't known about. As Liu Tinglan’s father and mother left, still worried, Mo Yan hurriedly pulled Liu Tinglan into her room.
Before Mo Yan could ask anything, Liu Tinglan took out a handkerchief, wiping her eyes while tearfully complaining, “The romance novels are all lies! The chili peppers don’t work, and pickled chili peppers are even worse! Look at me, my eyes are almost ruined by the spice. Luckily, I fooled my parents, or this pain would have been for nothing!”
Mo Yan was speechless. So this pitiful act was all for show? If this acting were applied in modern times, she could easily overshadow all those pretty actresses with no real talent.
But really, making yourself suffer like this and then blaming the chili peppers—was that really necessary?
Liu Tinglan, seeing through Mo Yan’s thoughts, effortlessly switched to a 'wronged woman' mode. “Wuwu, Yan Yan, my fiancé broke off our engagement, and then those shameless people turned it around and smeared our family’s reputation! I’m so miserable, can’t you comfort me a little?”
Seeing her friend perform so convincingly, Mo Yan was originally just planning to watch, but when she saw the tears streaming down Liu Tinglan's face, and heard the increasingly sorrowful cries, she couldn't tell whether they were real or fake. Her heart softened, and she pulled Liu Tinglan into an embrace to comfort her. “Alright, alright, stop crying. That kind of scum isn’t worth your tears. Now that you see his true nature, isn’t that a good thing?”
Liu Tinglan clutched Mo Yan’s sleeve, sobbing, “You’re right, but he’s so shameless. When my parents showed him all the evidence of his affairs and asked him to break the engagement, they were just trying to protect his dignity. He agreed in front of them, but right after they left, he bribed some street thugs to spread the story everywhere, saying that my family was dishonest, that we broke off the engagement without reason, and that I was a loose woman, that I wasn’t good enough for him! Wuwu, Yan Yan, if it were you, wouldn’t you be upset?”
By now, Liu Tinglan was genuinely heartbroken. Just thinking about how that vile man had been her fiancé made her feel worse than if she had swallowed a fly.
“What? That scum actually did that?” Mo Yan’s voice suddenly rose, shocked by the depths of Du’s shamelessness. She had expected him to cause trouble, but not to this extent.
If it had been her, at sixteen, facing such a betrayal, she would have cried her eyes out. In an era where a woman's reputation is everything, how much harm must Liu Tinglan have suffered from all the gossip?
Feeling deeply for her friend, Mo Yan clenched her fists and said through gritted teeth, “You wait, I’ll make that Du pay for his stupid actions!”
Liu Tinglan, with tears welling up, was moved but shook her head, trying to persuade her. “Yan Yan, don’t bother with that scum. If you get entangled with him, he’ll bite back, and it’ll drag you down too!”
Mo Yan poked her friend’s forehead, her expression stern. “Do you think I’m the kind of fool who would go to that scum and confront him publicly? You, though, have been through all this, and you didn’t send me a message earlier? Why didn’t you tell me sooner?”
Liu Tinglan, afraid of Mo Yan’s serious look, hurriedly leaned closer and hooked her arm around hers, trying to appease her. “I didn’t want you to worry. My parents also said the same thing. They told me not to tell you!”
Mo Yan sighed. “Your parents still don’t see me as one of their own. You’re my best friend, how could I stand by and watch you suffer?”
