Chapter 855: The Peasant Girl’s Splendid Manor

Chapter 855: The Truth Behind Breaking the Engagement (1)

Snakes are cold-blooded animals that need to hibernate. Usually, they begin to slowly wake up after the Jingzhe (the "Awakening of Insects" in the Chinese lunar calendar). However, when they first wake up, the weather is still cold, and they don’t usually roam around outside.

Now that the weather had warmed up, the snakes that survived winter hibernation were out. It was easy for the Red Python to summon a non-poisonous snake, but snakes also have territories.

At that time, a bamboo pit viper had claimed the area, so there couldn’t be any other non-poisonous snakes around. The non-poisonous snake summoned by Red Python was still on its way, but the bamboo pit viper attacked someone instead. It was an accidental, coincidental event no one had foreseen.

"Now I understand. Little Red, I’m sorry!" Realizing she had wronged the Red Python, Mo Yan gently patted its head and apologized with embarrassment.

The Red Python nuzzled Mo Yan’s hand with its hard mouth to show it didn’t mind and also felt guilty for not stopping the bamboo pit viper from causing harm in time.

“No, it’s not your fault!” Mo Yan took out a fragrant roasted piglet from her space and fed it to the Red Python, comforting it, “The bamboo pit viper is very aggressive; it’s known as one of the fiercest snakes. Even if you had noticed and stopped it in time, it would likely not spare someone daring to invade its territory. Don’t worry about it.”

The Red Python, however, felt more frustrated and made up its mind to go to the mountain to find the bamboo pit viper that had dared to ignore its presence and attack its owner’s friend. It wanted to teach the bamboo pit viper the ways of being a snake.

Mo Yan didn’t know what the Red Python was thinking. Seeing it flick its tongue, looking upset, she comforted it a bit more before heading back to her room.

Back in the room, Mo Yan saw that Liu Tinglan had already woken up. Liu was staring blankly at the ceiling, lost in thought.

Hearing footsteps, Liu Tinglan snapped out of it, patted the empty space next to her, and said, “Yan Yan, come lie down. Let’s talk.”

Mo Yan walked over but didn’t lie down. She checked Liu Tinglan’s forehead and, seeing her temperature was normal, asked, “Are you hungry? There’s food in the pot; I’ll bring some for you to eat.”

Liu Tinglan shook her head, her dry lips pale. “I don’t have an appetite. I don’t want to eat.”

Hearing this, Mo Yan frowned. “You lost a lot of blood today; you must eat! Wait here, I’ll make you a sweet soup. It’ll be ready soon.”

Without giving Liu Tinglan a chance to protest, Mo Yan handed her a travel journal to pass the time and went to the kitchen.

It was late, and the others had already gone to bed. Mo Yan was at ease as she took out some fresh longan, jujube, peanuts, and osmanthus from her space, planning to make a longan and jujube sweet soup.

She rinsed the longan, jujube, and peanuts with water, put them into a clay pot, added two bowls of diluted spiritual spring water, and placed the pot on the stove. The fire grew stronger, and soon, the water in the pot began to boil.

When the longan, jujube, and peanuts were almost done, Mo Yan added a spoonful of rice wine, a spoonful of brown sugar, and some fresh osmanthus. The entire kitchen soon filled with a sweet fragrance. If it weren’t for the fact that white fungus needed to soak for an hour to bring out its flavor, adding some would have improved the taste.

Liu Tinglan was leaning against the bedhead, absentmindedly flipping through the travel journal. When she heard footsteps outside the door, she sat up straight and, upon smelling the enticing fragrance, found herself suddenly salivating, though she hadn’t felt hungry before.

Mo Yan entered with the sweet soup and saw her friend sitting upright on the bed, holding the book and eagerly craning her neck, looking toward the door. The childish expression made Mo Yan smile. “Here’s a sweet soup that can replenish your blood. Drink it while it’s hot, and have two bowls every day. You’ll feel better soon.”
