Chapter 674: The Peasant Girl’s Splendid Manor
Chapter 674: The Schemes of Planting (3)
Mo Yongxi, who had come to see herself as superior, looked down on the poor but still had some motherly affection for Mo Hongshi, who had always been like a precious gem to her.
Hearing her mother’s complaints, she smiled and said, “How can a daughter look down on her own mother? I was just feeling a bit upset and didn’t pay attention when you arrived!”
Mo Hongshi was immediately upset: “What are you troubled about with all your fine food and clothes? Is it that your husband isn’t treating you well?”
Mo Yongxi's expression changed, and she forced a stiff smile: “He treats me well enough. It’s just that when I was out shopping with that noble lady, one of her servants mocked my background. I couldn’t stand the humiliation, so I argued with her. But everyone sided with that servant, and I was so infuriated that I came back. I’m still holding onto this grievance!”
Even though Mo Hongshi was Mo Yongxi’s biological mother, Mo Yongxi was reluctant to reveal that she had married a man with a preference for men. It wasn’t about feeling embarrassed in front of her mother but about not trusting Mo Hongshi’s discretion. If word got out and the villagers knew, how could she continue to hold herself up as a young lady in front of the poor? It would only invite ridicule.
Unaware of her daughter's thoughts, Mo Hongshi felt heartbroken upon learning of her beloved daughter's grievances. She couldn’t help but complain: “It’s all your father’s fault. If he had been as ambitious as your uncle, you’d be the daughter of a scholar, even a government official’s wife. Instead, you’re just the wife of a small shopkeeper, and people are mocking your background. It’s truly unfair to my precious daughter!”
Mo Hongshi spoke shamelessly and then cried while holding Mo Yongxi, lamenting her daughter's unfortunate fate and her own missed opportunities. She secretly resented her brother for being unable to see her worth and instead marrying her off to a useless man who ruined her life.
Back then, she had her sights set on Mo Da Biao, who was cultured and had the status of a scholar, not on Old Mo who lacked talent and could only farm.
Mo Yongxi stared blankly into space, fantasizing about a life as the daughter of a scholar. The more she thought about it, the more she felt her father was useless and blamed herself for not being the daughter of her uncle’s family. With a scholar father and scholar brother, even if she wasn’t as high-ranking as some women she met, she wouldn’t be subject to such ridicule, nor would she have to return home like a defeated dog.
Suddenly, Mo Yongxi thought of something and quickly pulled away from her sobbing mother, asking anxiously: “Mother, has that ungrateful wretch participated in the autumn examinations? Did he become a scholar?”
Mo Hongshi was taken aback by her daughter’s question, then, after a moment of stunned silence, replied angrily: “Why do you ask him? He’s an ungrateful wretch. Heaven should strike him down. How could he possibly become a scholar? Bah!”
Mo Yongxi’s face fell with disappointment: “He didn’t pass? Why didn’t he?”
Mo Hongshi, feeling frustrated, said: “How can you expect him to become a scholar when he treats our family this way? Are you really my daughter?”
Mo Yongxi's mood soured further, and she replied impatiently: “I told you that you wouldn’t understand. If that ungrateful wretch became a scholar, I could say that my family has a scholar brother. People would have to give me some respect.”
Mo Hongshi began to understand, though she was still displeased. For the sake of her promising daughter, she swallowed her frustration and replied indignantly: “That ungrateful wretch just returned the day before yesterday. Who knows if he passed or not?”
Mo Yongxi’s eyes gleamed with a glint of calculation as she said: “It should be coming soon. When the results are announced, I’ll have someone check. If he’s passed, I might gain some benefit as his cousin. If not, well, it’s his own fault. I won’t be at a loss.”
