 Chapter 503: Good Luck

The Shu family was fortunate. When they woke up early in the morning, it was already raining.

This was the first rainy day they encountered after six or seven days of exile.

The environment was already unfavorable, and now it was even worse with the pouring rain. Looking at the heavy rain, the Shu family felt despair.

Especially the elderly lady and the younger girls.

In this era, even a minor illness could be life-threatening.

Shu Yu couldn't help but furrow her brows as she looked at the officials not far away who were discussing whether to set off or not.

The Shu family prayed silently, but the officials approached and said, "The rain isn't too heavy. We already walk slowly, so let's not delay and continue."

The Shu family immediately felt hopeless, and someone couldn't hold back their tears.

Amidst the sound of rain, the crying sounded particularly desolate.

This caught the attention of a wealthy family who happened to be staying in the neighboring courtyard of the inn.

In that wealthy family, there was a girl the same age as the seventh miss of the Shu family. Feeling bored and idle due to the rain, she came over to inquire.

She was startled when she heard the crying and ran back to inform the adults.

The wealthy family didn't want to meddle in other people's affairs, but they thought it was a good opportunity to educate their daughter, who was spoiled and naive.

However, instead of scaring the little girl, it aroused her sympathy. Upon learning that the Shu family had to continue their journey in such conditions, shackled with handcuffs and without rain gear, and with elderly and young children among them, she was overwhelmed with a sense of justice.

Especially considering that these people were not at fault themselves; they were merely implicated by their family, making their situation even more pitiful.

Fortunately, she didn't go over by herself but asked her parents to talk to the officials and provide them with some umbrellas.

Although the wealthy family was reluctant, they knew that these were officials' dependents and thought that if they helped them today, they might remember this act of kindness in the future.

It was just a few umbrellas, after all. They handed them over.

The wealthy family patriarch spoke to the officials, and after a moment of hesitation, they agreed.

After all, they didn't have to pay for the umbrellas, and they didn't want the Shu family to fall ill on the road. If someone died from an illness, it would be fine, but if they were half-dead and barely clinging to life, it would only delay their journey.

Thus, Shu Yu and all the members of the Shu family received an umbrella.

The wealthy family had quite a few members, so there were plenty of umbrellas to spare.

The Shu family breathed a sigh of relief. Although they would still get wet even with the umbrellas due to the heavy rain, it was still better than having nothing.

When Shu Yu stepped out, the leading official handed her a raincoat and said, "If something happens to you, we won't have anywhere to dig up silver in Dong'an Prefecture."

Shu Yu gratefully accepted it and walked out with the jealous and envious gazes of her family.

The rain lasted for half a day and finally subsided in the afternoon. When they arrived at the next inn, it had stopped.

In the evening, Meng Yunzheng came over and brought a pair of shoes for Shu Yu.

While Shu Yu was relatively fine overall, her feet were in bad condition, soaked and wrinkled.

The shoes Meng Yunzheng brought were the same as the ones she had been

wearing. He had even taken the time to clean them, as they were quite dirty.

He also brought medicine for Shu Yu and said, "Zhao Xi gave this to me. Take it, and you'll be fine. It shouldn't rain tomorrow, so don't worry."

Shu Yu nodded in appreciation.

The next day, as expected, the weather cleared up, and Meng Yunzheng, who was staying at the inn in town, breathed a sigh of relief.

The two of them rode in a carriage and left the town. The road was muddy from the rain, slowing their progress, but soon a mule cart caught up from behind.
